Dozens of masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers harvesting olives in the West Bank village of Abu Falah on October 16, 2026. The settlers set olive groves on fire and hurled stones using slingshots in a coordinated assault. Among those injured was Heidi Levine, a veteran photojournalist for The Washington Post, who was wearing a protective vest clearly marked "PRESS." Levine was pushed to the ground, kicked repeatedly, and had her cameras and phone stolen. She was treated in hospitals in Ramallah and Israel for multiple injuries, including a broken rib and a finger wound requiring surgery.

Witnesses reported that Israeli troops arrived shortly before the attack but did not intervene against the settlers, instead firing tear gas at Palestinians. The Israeli military and police are investigating the incident. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the facts remain unclear and are under investigation, while the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem condemned all criminal violence in the West Bank and called for accountability.

This attack follows a pattern of escalating settler violence during the olive harvest season, with over 1,600 settler attacks documented by the United Nations between January and August 2026. Journalists covering the West Bank olive harvest have faced repeated assaults, including a recent attack on Agence France-Presse photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh. Rights groups have condemned the violence and called for protection of journalists and Palestinians in the area.
